Description:

The Ilford Witness was initially a design exercise in 1945/47 by two German-Jewish refugees; ex-Leitz employee Robert Sternberg and ex-Zeiss employee Werner Julius Rothschild (often incorrectly stated as D.A.Rothschild). Thus, it incorporated attributes of both the Leica and Zeiss Ikon Contax rangefinder cameras. At this time, the Leica IIIC and Contax IIa cameras were just resuming production after WW2 and all new cameras were very scarce and expensive. In the late 1940's, SLR cameras were still under development and not in general use, so Leica and Contax 35mm rangefinders, Rolleiflex/Rolleicord roll film TLRs, and 5"x4" Speed Graphics were the photographic 'tools' of wealthy amateurs and serious photo-journalists. Sternberg and Rothschild approached Ilford in 1947 with their advanced 35mm rangefinder design. Ilford wanted to develop a range of cameras and thus agreed to manufacture the Witness.

Only 350 example of the Witness were made, and it is not known how many survive today, especially with the original box and instructions. A very rare opportunity for a collector looking for the most complete Ilford Witness set. We have had this particular example serviced, and it is ready for another 70 years of service.

Camera body serial number is #5309

Lens serial number is #438731

Condition:

Cosmetic: Cosmetically, the camera is very good for the age, with only light signs of use, such as paintwork wearing away around the strap lugs, and some light rub marks to the sharper edges of the body. There is a little surface oxidation around the wind knob. On the interior of the camera, there is some brassing to the underneath. There is some damage to the eyepiece-side corner of the camera where the back meets the body. A small amount of material has sheared. This is shown in one of the photos.

Mechanical: All working The shutter is working correctly at all speeds, and was serviced in December 2020. The film transport and rewind works correctly. The rangefinder is working and correctly calibrated. The focus is smooth, as is the aperture. The lens locks into place correctly on the mount. There is some damage to the eyepiece-side corner of the camera where the back meets the body. A small amount of material has sheared. This is shown in one of the photos.

Optical: The rangefinder is appropriately bright and clear. The lens is in lovely condition, it has some really light surface marks to the front element, a couple of coating spots to the rear element and a few specks of internal dust. There is no haze, fungus or major scratching.

Electronic: The sync socket triggers a flash.

What's included?

The Ilford Witness comes with the original box, original fitted case, original instructions, lens cap (more than likely, original) and a very lovely period correct tan outfit case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stock Photos

The photos you see are likely to be stock photos, although this is not always the case. Due to the sheer amount of different items coming in, we're unable to photograph each item individually.

The description and photos are representative of the item you will receive - of course, if you're looking for a specific version, or serial number, feel free to get in touch and ask us for more details.

Some products don't have photos, why is that?

Our website features a full, live listing of our entire inventory. As soon as it comes into the shop, we list it here on the website too. It takes time to get through everything, so not everything will have a photograph.

Delivery

When can I expect my order?

We are a small team running a busy shop, and as such we can't always post items out immediately - but we endeavour to dispatch stock within 48 hours of receiving cleared payment (not including weekends or bank holidays)

If you need an item for the next day, or have any particular delivery requirements, we are happy to try and accommodate this if you discuss it with us prior to ordering. Once the item has been dispatched, we cannot be held responsible for any service delays from the courier that is used. We always post items with delivery confirmation and full insurance up the order value.

Condition

All used equipment we sell is comprehensively inspected and tested by us. We grade our items with the following scale:

Mint- : Mint Minus. As close to new as a used item can be. It will have absolutely minimal signs of use. Of course, fully functional in all respects. We tend to use this rating sparingly.

Exc+ : Excellent Plus. Very good condition, it will have seen light use and there will be some very minor cosmetic imperfections. Of course, everything is fully functional in all respects unless otherwise stated in the description.

Exc : Excellent. Used condition but good overall - what you might expect from a second hand item. Some signs of use, but of course fully working unless otherwise stated. Our standard condition rating.

Avg : Average. Relatively poor condition overall but still fully working. Will have obvious signs of use and/or minor issues - for example optics may have small defects, a built-in light meter may not work, there may be cosmetic imperfections - and so on - but nothing too detrimental to its functionality and the item will be mostly usable in it’s original capacity.

Ugly: Ugly - only a mother could love it! Heavily used, beaten up, or whatever you want to call it. The item will function but will have some obvious defects - for example the slow shutter speeds may not be working, there may be a ding to a filter rim, deep scratches to optics, or significant signs of use and wear.

Additional Condition information

Please note that for any condition rating, we do not guarantee selenium-cell light meters which are built into cameras due to age. These types of meter are usually only found on much older models which are 40-50 years old, and have often decayed to inaccurate or inoperative levels.

Also note that all used lenses will have some specks of dust in the optics no matter what the condition rating.

Warranty

All items come with three months guarantee unless otherwise stated. For full information, see our Terms and Conditions page.
